Iran, Malaysia sign deal to fight drug trafficking

TEHRAN – Iran and Malaysia have signed an agreement to launch a joint campaign against trafficking of illicit drugs.
The agreement was signed between Iran’s Deputy Interior Minister for Security Affairs Ali Abdollahi and Malaysian Deputy Home Minister Datuk Wira Abu Seman Yusop in Tehran on Monday.According to Malaysian police, the majority of drug smugglers arrested in Malaysia are from Nigeria, Turkey, Iran, and Bulgaria. Smugglers sell their drugs to their compatriots in Malaysia.
In the current year, over 90 Iranians have been arrested by the Malaysian police on charges of carrying illegal drugs valued at about two million dollars.
On Thursday, an Iranian couple was arrested at Kuala Lumpur airport on charges of smuggling drugs.
Abdollahi said there is a growing concern over the bond between Iranian and Malaysian drugs gangs.
However, Abdollahi said smuggling of illegal drugs out of Iran has declined dramatically.
